I am also an atheist and am trying to do a paper on the absurdity of the millennium prophecies. I'm not having much luck finding material that discredits the fear-mongering that is occurring. I thought I had seen an article about it on this site before, but I can't find it now. Do you have any idea where I could find something like this? I appreciate any help you can offer!

I realize this response is probably too late for you, but I just stumbled upon a recent (1998) book that is an in-depth study of this hysteria. The book is called End Times Visions and is by Richard Abanes.
